The Polish Sejm has decided to withdraw from the international Ottawa Treaty, which bans anti-personnel landmines. According to RMF24, 413 MPs supported the decision, 15 opposed it and 3 abstained.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described the withdrawal as “vital for regional security” and said, “Poland cannot be constrained by any restrictions that hinder the defence of our homeland.”
Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland also recently withdrew from the treaty due to the growing threat from Russia. Warsaw plans to increase defence spending and estimates that Poland’s arms industry could produce up to one million anti-personnel mines in the coming years.
