IRNA: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made his first public appearance since the start of the acute phase of the Iran-Israel conflict, attending a religious event dedicated to the Day of Ashura.

Iranian news agencies: Khamenei attends his first public event in weeks

Ashura Day falls on July 5 of the Gregorian calendar this year. Ashura is celebrated by all Muslims, but its meaning varies for different sects of Islam. Sunnis consider the date important because of God’s help in saving Moses from Pharaoh’s soldiers.

For Shiites, it primarily commemorates the death of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) It is a day of mourning for Imam Hussein, the grandson of Muhammad. Imam Hussein was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala on October 10, 680, and his relatives and 70 companions were also killed. On Ashura Day, Shiites hold self-flagellation ceremonies, a tradition that symbolizes the suffering of Hussein before his death.

The title of the video published on the agency’s official Telegram channel reads: “(For the first time since the beginning of the acute phase of the conflict) the moment when the leader of the (Islamic) revolution (cultural and religious center – ed.) Husseini Imam Khomeini appeared during the mourning ceremony on the night of Ashura.”
