Germany has requested that Chinese AI app DeepSeek be removed from the Apple and Google app stores over data protection concerns.
German authorities took the step after DeepSeek allegedly sent user data to Chinese servers without sufficient protection and violated European data protection laws (GDPR).
The Berlin Data Protection Authority has requested that the app be banned until it can prove that it complies with European privacy rules.
The request comes after Italy banned DeepSeek on similar grounds, and other countries in Europe are likely to take similar steps.
DeepSeek has become popular around the world with its low-cost and open-source AI model DeepSeek-R1, but has faced restrictions in many countries due to concerns about data privacy and the possibility of Chinese intelligence agencies accessing the data.
Germany’s move is seen as a reflection of growing security concerns over Chinese-based technologies.
