US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that US forces “opened fire” on a ship he said was carrying a drug shipment from Venezuela.
“A lot of drugs have been coming into our country for a long time. And they were coming from Venezuela,” Trump said, without providing further details, only saying that more information about the operation would be released “soon.”
The president’s statement came as the US has a fleet of three Aegis guided missile destroyers, submarines, and aircraft deployed in international waters bordering Venezuela, which he described as an anti-drug trafficking operation.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the operation in a social media post. “US military forces launched a deadly attack today in the Southern Caribbean on a drug smuggling vessel operating from Venezuela and operated by a designated narco-terrorist organization,” the top US diplomat wrote.
