Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that the cabinet has authorized the army to disarm non-state actors by the end of the year.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam authorized the army to disarm non-state actors by the end of the year in 2025.
However, it is known that there have been intense discussions and political initiatives in Lebanon throughout 2025 regarding the sole control of weapons under state control.
In this context, the issue of Hezbollah’s disarmament, in particular, has been frequently raised by both domestic and foreign actors.
It has been stated that the Council of Ministers meeting scheduled for August 5, 2025, will discuss the issue of “the sole control of weapons under state control,” and that a historic decision on this matter is expected.
In his speech on Army Day, August 1, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun emphasized the need for the sole control of weapons and stated that this issue will be discussed in the Council of Ministers.
Nawaf Salam also stated that talks would be held on July 29, 2025, regarding the establishment of state sovereignty solely with its own forces.
However, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qasim stated on July 30, 2025, that disarmament was an internal Lebanese matter and that they would not disarm Israel.
Furthermore, US Special Representative for Syria Tom Barrack stated that he was pressuring the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah and expected concrete steps in this regard.
In short, the Lebanese government, led by Nawaf Salam, is working towards securing a state monopoly on weapons.
This process is progressing within a complex balance between regional and international pressures, particularly the demands of the US and Israel, and Hezbollah’s resistance.
