US President Donald Trump announced that he has begun talks with Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Shara at the White House.
The two leaders are meeting behind closed doors, and no joint press conference or statement is expected following the talks.
As previously reported by the White House press pool, al-Shara plans to discuss with the American leader the possibility of Syria joining the international coalition fighting ISIS and the potential easing of US sanctions during his visit.
The pool also notes that al-Shara’s visit holds symbolic significance and could signal a reassessment of Washington’s policy toward Damascus after years of sanctions and attempts at international isolation.
