Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has declared the Cartel of the Suns a terrorist organization and called for an investigation into its influence in Ecuador.
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Thursday declared the “Cartel of the Suns” a terrorist organization operating on Ecuadorian soil and instructed the National Intelligence Center (CNI) to analyze its influence within the criminal gangs, which the Ecuadorian president has declared a “war” on since the beginning of 2024.
Noboa followed suit with US President Donald Trump’s administration, whose Treasury Department sanctioned the Cartel of the Suns as a terrorist organization in late July through an executive order.
The Ecuadorian president took the step after US Attorney General Pam Bondi linked Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to drug trafficking and announced a $50 million reward for information leading to the Chavista leader’s arrest.
