The Haitian Transitional Presidential Council has not yet set a date for the first elections in a decade.
The last high-ranking official elected at the polls was President Jovenel Moïse, who was assassinated in his residence in July 2021.

Just months before the elections are scheduled, Haiti has declared a state of emergency again due to violence perpetrated by armed gangs in the Caribbean nation.
At least 1,520 people were killed and 609 injured in the second quarter of 2025.
This measure, adopted by the Haitian Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) and the government amidst a deteriorating situation, was announced over the weekend to “continue combating insecurity and addressing the agricultural and food crisis,” a move that has left at least one in three residents of the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area internally displaced.
This is not the first time the CPT, established in April 2024, has approved a similar decision, though it has yet to yield concrete results. Civilians eagerly await the restoration of peace and security.
One of the CPT’s core responsibilities, in addition to maintaining public order and security, is to organize free and transparent elections by the end of 2025, ensuring the inauguration of a president elected at the ballot box on February 7, 2026 (the traditional date of the inauguration).
However, a date for the elections has not yet been set.
